COLUMBIA, S.C. – MAY 13, 2025 – At the recent Students in Action Showcase, hosted by SC Thrive and sponsored by Aflac, service-minded teens came together to connect, collaborate, and celebrate their civic impact. Youth leaders shared powerful stories of service, highlighting how they’re making a difference in their schools and communities.

The student groups raised a combined nearly $40,000 to support multiple charitable causes across the state.

Students in Action, active in over 40 South Carolina schools, empowers teens to lead positive change in their communities. These student groups partner with charitable and mission-driven organizations to build a better South Carolina for all.

“We’re incredibly proud of these young leaders and the lasting impact they’re making in their schools and communities,” said Tricia Richardson, Chief Executive Officer of SC Thrive. “This program shows the power of youth leadership to shape a brighter future. We’re grateful to Aflac for supporting this vital initiative, which prepares these students to thrive in college, careers and beyond.”

Special projects highlighted at the annual showcase include:

  • Leadership Class at Summerville High School (Summerville, SC)
    • Students served peers with disabilities and special needs by creating inclusive, joyful experiences each week, hosting activities like bracelet-making and dance parties.
    • Partnered with the Special Olympics to organize supportive events, such as a field day, a cheer event, and a prom.
  • Students in Action Class at Lexington High School (Lexington, SC)
    • Held multiple fundraisers supporting cancer charities, including Cancer of Many Colors and St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
  • Jobs for America’s Graduates Class at Darlington High School (Darlington, SC)

“Aflac supports communities where we live, work and raise families by helping to empower the next generation, some of whom may be the future of our company, to become compassionate leaders and changemakers,” said Bob Ruff, senior vice president, Group Voluntary Benefits, at Aflac. “By supporting impactful youth-led service work through SC Thrive, we are investing in South Carolina’s future — ensuring that young people have the tools, training and encouragement they need to lead with purpose and positively impact their communities.”
